DME REquipment, MA

About Us

REquipment is a statewide durable medical equipment (DME) reuse program designed to bridge the gap between medical necessity and accessibility in Massachusetts. Operated under MassMATCH, the state’s Assistive Technology (AT) Act Program, REquipment ensures that high-quality, gently used medical equipment reaches individuals who need it most. This initiative addresses a critical challenge: many people with disabilities, seniors, and those recovering from illness or injury face financial and logistical barriers to obtaining essential DME.

REquipment offers a convenient way for individuals and families in Greater Boston and Central Massachusetts to access free, gently-used durable medical equipment (DME). By redistributing equipment that is no longer in use, REquipment helps keep valuable DME out of landfills and in the hands of those who need it most. All donated equipment is sanitized, refurbished, and available at no cost (a delivery fee may apply). The program only accepts and provides high-quality DME, offers easy access online or by phone, and provides device pick-up and delivery as needed.

What REquipment Does

REquipment collects, refurbishes, and redistributes DME such as wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, and hospital beds. This service is free of charge, though a delivery fee may apply for those unable to pick up their equipment. All donated items go through a rigorous sanitization and refurbishment process, ensuring they meet safety and usability standards before being made available to the public. By repurposing medical equipment that would otherwise be discarded, REquipment not only reduces environmental waste but also extends the lifespan of costly medical devices, making assistive technology more accessible across the state.

Sustainability and Waste Reduction

In addition to improving healthcare accessibility, REquipment plays a significant role in reducing medical waste. A single power wheelchair can cost upwards of $3,000 to $5,000, yet many go unused after a short period. Rather than sending these devices to landfills, REquipment ensures they are properly refurbished and given a second life. Each year, millions of tons of medical equipment are discarded in the US, contributing to unnecessary environmental waste. Programs like REquipment directly combat this issue, promoting a circular economy for medical devices while helping individuals regain mobility and independence.

How the Process Works

  • Donation – Individuals, healthcare facilities, and organizations donate gently used DME that is still in good condition.
  • Refurbishment & Sanitization – Each item undergoes professional cleaning and, if necessary, minor repairs to ensure it meets safety standards.
  • Redistribution – Approved equipment is listed on the REquipment website, where individuals can browse and request available items.
  • Pickup or Delivery – Recipients can arrange to pick up their equipment or opt for home delivery for a small fee.

The Impact of REquipment

Since its inception, REquipment has provided over 10,000 pieces of durable medical equipment to individuals across Massachusetts, saving residents an estimated $4 million in out-of-pocket costs. With rising healthcare expenses, the demand for affordable assistive technology continues to grow.
