Funding for Home and Community

Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS)

People who receive support from the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) may be eligible for assistive technology (AT) through the DDS Adaptive Technology Services.

Assistive Technology Services at the DDS

The Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS) provides services to adults aged 18 or older who have intellectual disabilities, as well as children under age 18 with intellectual disabilities. DDS coordinates AT services to match the individual’s specific needs, with assistance provided by DDS case managers. Case managers help ensure that AT needs are met and may refer individuals to a DDS adaptive technology center, if appropriate.

Currently, there are five adaptive technology centers located across the state. Four of these centers serve individuals living in DDS facilities. The Kelley Assistive Technology Center, located in Hathorne (serving the northeast), and Commonwealth Community Services’ Adaptive Design Services offer specialized support. Adaptive Design Services, operated by Commonwealth Community Services, provides services for community-based individuals. DDS adaptive technology centers offer assistance with evaluating and meeting AT needs.

DDS adaptive technology services may include referrals, assessments, and direct support to address AT needs related to mobility, communication, or daily living. AT solutions provided through DDS include equipment such as ramps, specialized devices, modifications for home environments, and technology tailored specifically to individual needs. Visit the DDS Assistive Technology Services web page.
