Adaptive Technology Services at the DDS

The Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS) provides services to adults aged 18 or older who have intellectual disabilities, and children under 18 who have a developmental disability. A variety of supports, housing options, training, and other services may be offered to meet the specific needs of individual consumers and their families. These services can include adaptive technology devices and services for home, work, and community settings. A DDS service coordinator works with consumers to ensure their AT devices and service needs are met, including making referrals to adaptive technology centers when appropriate.

Currently, there are five adaptive technology centers throughout Massachusetts. Four of these centers serve individuals residing in DDS facilities. The Kelley Assistive Technology Center in Hathorne (serving northeastern Massachusetts) and Commonwealth Community Services’ Adaptive Design Services in Northampton (serving western and central Massachusetts) also assist DDS consumers living in community-residential environments or at home with their families. AT services available from DDS range from assessments and evaluations to equipment design, fabrication, modification, and repair. These services address mobility, environmental, vocational, leisure, and communication needs.
